Kernel panic after 2.6.36 update

Hi.

I got this error in my Nehemiah Epia (after a regular pacman -Syu update; x86).

Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/sda1...
EXT4-fs (sda1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)
not activating Mandatory Access Control now since /sbin/tomoyo-init doesn/t exit.

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
Pid: 1, comm: init Not Tainted 2.6.36-ARCH #1

I've removed the bluetooth and wireless dongles to check if they were the problem (working fine till now), but the error persist.

I can not boot it in regular or fallback mode. So, How I could solve it? Any idea?

I've been reading about the Udev issue, but users in that threat (or the one linked by @Inxsible) can access their machines in regular or fallback mode and then get ramdon crashes. I can't boot even in fallback.

I'm trying to follow this guide: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_Panics

After chroot /mnt I get an "Ilegal Instruction" reply.

If anyway I try to do the rollback step, the system do no satisfy the dependencies (linux-firmware and kernel26<2.6.34). So I'm stuck.

As in /mnt/var/cache/pacman/pkg there is a udev-164-2-i686.pkg.tar.xz could I do a rollback of that package to check if it is the problem? The last version there, is 165-1

Edit pacman -U udev-164-2-i686.pkg.tar.xz doesn't work. But I don't know if it's a problem with the chroot or whatelse.

Ideas?

What commands are you using to chroot?

You may be better to clear cache either pacman -Sc or go into cache and remove udev from there

Make sure grub config and fstab are ok sometime silly things break systems

I've followed the above guide step by step. So I just typed "chroot /mnt" as it says.

If you entered commands correctly you should end up in chroot so something was done wrong

check /dev /proc etc are mounted correctly

Yes. I repeated the steps twice and if I try to mount proc and sysfs again the system says they are already mounted. Repeating mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev has no effect.

Well I assume you have mounted /root and /boot as required

a simple

mount

will tell you what is mounted and where

Are you using install disc Arch?

You may have more luck with this

Just tested the above with Arch install cd and it works fine

Yep, I'm using the install disc.

Following your suggested guide I end in the same Ilegal Instruction reply after "chroot . /bin/bash"

Your VIA C3 is missing an instruction. The kernel26-crusoe package mentioned in the thread you originally linked is probably a good place to start.

From a quick search it could be a hardware problem might be worth trying chroot with drive in a different system or external case

I've check it and the Nehemia has a set of CMOV instructions. So it should be i686 compilant. But maybe it's not a complete set.

When I installed Arch on it the first time I had a lot of problems, since setting the root password end with a infinite loop of "Illegal Instruction" warnings. But if you skiped that and set the pass after the installation was complete, it worked.

Now that is not possible and reinstalling the system is not a solution. I presume that the new updates are messing with it. So, by the moment, I must install another OS in that machine. Which is kind of sad. I love to run Arch in all my machines. It does my life easier.

@Mr Green, Debian or Xubuntu have previously worked (I moved it to Arch from Debian) and I used Knoppix to save some data (configs from /etc). As I always do a separate /home partition I've been able to install a Xubuntu OS with support for EXT4, without losing the files, so I only have to reinstall some programs.

But I like Arch, is cleaner and lightweight and I can select what to install, you know? In add, I really hate Ubuntu Updates.

This is probably related to the recent glibc update that bumped the --enable-version flag to 2.6.27 from 2.6.18.

Well I hate to say it but maybe something like crunchbang now they have rolling release [debian]

There is an architecture forum and maybe you may find something there possibly i586 but support is going to be a problem

An Example: Arch+XFCE: 87 running processes. Xubuntu: 125 running processes.

And I had to uninstall a lot of things.

Update for those with Epia boards searching in the forums:

Now it's running Archbang! with linux 3.x. And it's working fine (and a lot better/faster than xubuntu). So maybe it was a problem with that kernel series. It's possible, BTW, that now it works with full Arch Linux(archbang! is sightly different and uses openbox)
