Active Topics is also very important for instance when you accidentally press "Mark all as read". And it is also very useful for people who are not logged in.

Re: Forums updated to FluxBB 1.4.3

My suggestion would be:
Remove the "Mark all topics as read" from the top-right menu. It does not really belong there, people accidentally click it and last but not least on small screen the menu line wraps.

Instead make it possible to mark single threads as read from the thread overview. E.g. by clicking on the blue squares. If needed one could still add some kind of button on top or bottom of this column to mark all listed threads as read.

In short: make the UI more intuitive and avoid several lines of plain text menu links.

Re: Forums updated to FluxBB 1.4.3

Pierre,

That would mean that if I have 5 pages of new posts, I would have to individually click each one to mark them read or logout and then login again.

I would rather have the "Mark all topics as read"

Re: Forums updated to FluxBB 1.4.3

@Pierre
you can go to an unread thread (simply click on the link, no UI changes needed) and it will be marked as read. But, as Inxsible already wrote, it's a chore to do this for dozens of threads every day.

Your idea is a bit like the Gmail 'tick box', while the "Mark all topics as read" link is just like "Mark all as read" in Google Reader. As the only action you can do with the links on the forum is 'click' = 'goto' = 'mark as read', the second approach is clearly a better one. When you have a bunch of actions to choose from, like 'star', 'subscribe to', 'unsubscribe to', 'mark as read', 'mark as unread' etc., your idea would be great.

This is true; but both are example of secondary uses, ie., an error and non-registered users. For that reason I would move the Active Topics link to somewhere less prominent, and include only the New Posts link at the top level.

I kinda skimmed a bit but if it's right that "Show your posts" is being re-implemented in the next version (as "New Replies" or whatever), then thank you.

Where's "Mark topics as read" now again? That's the most important feature to have...

Hey people,

how is this for a cleaned up header, with the "your posts" link returning (now called "Yours")?

We've been discussing this. Does anybody think that this is misleading?

Topics: Yours

After all, you get to see all topics you have posted to, not only the ones you started.
Maybe I should also mentioned that the title of the link reads "Find all topics you have contributed to."

@lie2815: Looks way better than the current menu.

Btw: You can use this in general to make some menus easier to read, e.g.

I always thought that was a bit misleading, but learned to live with it, a bit like clicking 'Start' to turn off your computer :-)
"Find all topics you have contributed to." is an awfully long phrase, but it's correct.

That depends on how you evaluate "contribution". tongue

s/contribute/participate would be more accurate.

Suggestions:

  • With your posts : "Find all topics with your posts."   <-- This is completely clear and still quite short.

  • Yours : "Find all topics with your posts."

  • Your input : "Find all topics with your posts."

  • Bumped : "Find all topics you have bumped."

  • Your bumps : "Find all topics you have bumped."

  • Your humps, your humps,  your lovely forum bumps : "Whatcha gonna do wit all that junk? All that junk, that you bumped."

or s/your/my/g and s/yours/mine/g.

Re: Forums updated to FluxBB 1.4.3

lie2815, thanks for working on this and integrating people's feedback. I am very grateful.

I'm fine with "Yours," but maybe that's because I'm following this thread and know what it's about. I think "Your Posts" or "My Posts" is much more clear. But it's two words, if you were trying to keep it to one.

You could put "Yours" in the "Posts" section, that would make more sense to me, i.e.:

Posts: New, Yours    Topics: Active, Unanswered

Re: Forums updated to FluxBB 1.4.3

I think a combination of the suggestions litemotiv and cb474 made would be nice.

Posts: New | My Topics: Active | Unanswered

I would prefer the "Yours" link to behave like the old "Show your posts" one.
But It would be also nice to have a link which shows only topics you started.
Maybe only on the users profile page.

@lie2815

Re: Forums updated to FluxBB 1.4.3

To state my personal opinion:
With a title attribute in place that (more or less) clearly explains what the link is meant for, the short link title should be okay this way. After that, it becomes a habit anyway.

I don't like this, for the simple reason that this could be viewed as just as misleading, since when clicking on that link one gets to see all topics he or she has posted in, not all of the posts created by him or her.

I can see that. They both have shortcomings. Putting "Yours" under Topics suggests to me that it will list threads that I started, not any thread that I posted in. Putting "Yours" under Posts could suggest, as you say, this it will list every post I've made.

So both fail to cleanly indicated what you're going to get. That said, to me putting it under Posts seems closer to accurate and less misleading to me, because the threads are being selected by whether or not I have posted in them.

But I can see it either way. What do others think?

I prefer lie2815's way, for what it's worth tongue, but again it's subjective and can go either way.

Yet another, even shorter suggestion from another FluxBB developer, that - in my eyes - combines the best of both worlds:

quy wrote:

Posted = Find topics to which you have contributed.
New = Find topics with new posts since your last visit.
Active = Find topics which contain recent posts.
Unanswered = Find topics which have not been replied to.

Unanswered = Find topics which have not been replied to.

"Topics: Posted" is still misleading. It could be interpreted as "topics that you've posted".
I think "Bumped" is a better term. It indicates both topics that you have posted and topics in which you have replied.

The word itself is mostly arbitrary though, as the mouse-over explanation will make it clear. Incidentally, I think "contributed" is the wrong term. It's only contribution if the post is useful. Why not use "Find topics with your posts"? This is clear, neutral, and matches "Posted".

If you wish to use "contributed", then the link should be "Contributed" or "Contributions".

Meh, +1 Bumped = Find topics which you have bumped.
