[SOLVED] Unable to access specific server

I am unable to access specific server on the net from my Arch (laptop), whereas I can access it from Winblows (same laptop). Other PCs in my WLAN are able to access it.

When pinging, I'm getting 100% packet loss.

It started happening around 6PM yesterday, in the middle of important work :@

I was searching the forums, but found nothing relevant except that I have to disable IPv6. I did that, tried both methods from Wiki, but no help. Even tried lowering the MTU - nothing.
Even tried with Opera, Chromium, Firefox4, Epiphany - nothing.

Do you have any idea what could it be? sad

Thanks in advance!

[addition]
When trying to connect to ftp via Nautilus, I get:

Error: Error connecting: Connection timed out
Please select another viewer and try again.

There is no help. Till now nobody discovered what is provoking such behavior on different sites for different people.

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to access specific server

Could it be an ipv6 issue with the server?  You might want to try temporarily disabling it and seeing if that doesn't improve your situation.

Edit: nevermind, if you've already tried everything in the linked thread, then I don't have any ideas for you.

Just to be sure, check your hosts, hosts.allow and hosts.deny

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to access specific server

@Inxsible: both of them are alright...

@Mektub: Is your problem still occurring?

here's the ping output: big_smile big_smile big_smile

[root@deda ~]# ping www.codingcat.com
PING codingcat.com (205.251.129.242) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C
--- codingcat.com ping statistics ---
1442 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 1441267ms

made me laugh. -.-

[Addition]
I just found out that it *might* have something with IPv6!
This is dmesg output:

[ 148.323366] eth1: no IPv6 routers present

(eth1 -> wifi)
I'll try with disabling the module again...

open second terminal and do a packet capture (or use wireshark) while you perform the ping. See if you see anything unusual.
try ping with a pattern too (like -p ff), to send a ping packet with all ones. Try adjusting the ping packet size too.

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to access specific server

To Re-recapitulate again:

OK, my big mystery: I don't have problems with devianart or softpedia (others have), but since about 6 months I can not load tinypic.com.

Desktop: fully updated ARCH, FF last stable version, FF Beta 10, Chromium, Opera. Midori

With or without ipv6, with clean profile, also with new test user: does not load.

Laptop: multi-boot. win7, Arch, Archbang, Debian SID.

                       Arch: same as Desktop
Archbang, win7, Debian SID: loads without problems (!), any browser.

This left me completely baffled. Especially ArchBang.
Traceroute to tinypic in Arch or Archbang are exactly equal.

I only noticed this phenomenon with tinypic, and I do browse a lot around.

I did now a fresh installation of Arch (64bits) on my Desktop, before copying whatsoever from my 32 bit installation, situation as above, no joy.

Tried: ipv6, no-ipv6, hosts, hosts.allow, hosts.deny, resolv.conf, different name servers, ip number.

But I then installed windows 7 on a virtual machine under VirtualBox and surprise ! I can access tinypic.com !
I then installed Arch in the same VB, and re-surprise! I also can access tinypic.com !

Go figure...

@cactus: I will do a capture with wireshark when I get home tonight, thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to access specific server

Strange. I used Wireshark and got this when pinging:

ICMP Destination unreachable (Port unreachable)

[EDIT]
Also got:

31 10.064683 209.85.149.104 192.168.1.100 TCP [TCP ACKed lost segment] http > 53420 [ACK] Seq=1 Ack=2 Win=106 Len=0 TSV=2320908137 TSER=4294906857

All of my ports are forwarded, so it's not my bad. Could it be my stupid ISP? It happened before that they haven't updated their DNS records for more than 2 days...
What do you guys think?

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to access specific server

Guys, I got the solution - it was all about my hosting provider!!! mad

I've set 2 directories on server to be password protected (auth realm stuff), so I got my client messing up with typing random passwords in order to login to check his website progress (although I gave him correct user/pass).

So, my hosting provider's IT dept. got my IP blocked (dunno why me?!)

Here's what I got from them:

csf.deny: 92.xxx.xxx.x # lfd: 30 (htpasswd) login failures from 92.xxx.xxx.x (RS/-/-) in the last 300 secs - Mon Apr 25 18:34:55 2011

Apparently, I tried logging in 30 times with bad password lol big_smile So they blocked me from entering the server.

Anyway, that was the solution. Typing wrong password in order to login to a password protected directory.

Thank you all for your time and effort in solving this stupid issue <3
