[GNOME3] What are the minimum system requirements to run gnome-shell?

Hi, I just updated to GNOME3 and when I did a startx, a pop-up message said that my computer cannot run the new gnome-shell so it will be using the fallback mode. So, what are the minimum system requirements to get gnome-shell running?

My current computer specs are:
    Intel® Core™ Processor  i3-2310M Intel Sandy Bridge (2.1GHz / 1333 MHz/ 3MB L3 Cache)
    Arch Linux - x86_64 (previously Free DOS)
    2GB DDR3 RAM
    640GB SATA Hard Disk Drive
    ATI Radeon HD 6370M 1GB
    Atheros Communications AR8152 v2.0 Fast Ethernet
    Broadcom Corporation Device 4727

I hope anyone can help me out. I like the look of GNOME3 so far but not being able to run gnome-shell makes me feel that I am missing out on some things.

Wow you should be able to run gnome-shell :S

I'm currently running it on my netbook:

Intel Atom n270 1.6 GHz
Intel GMA950
1Gb Ram

It runs the shell quite well and doesn't need to to into fallback mode. To run the shell what is needed is 3d capable video card, are you running Catalyst? I hear that causes problems with gnome-shell, so best option is to use the open source drivers, though your card looks pretty new so I don't know what support it has with them.

EDIT: This table gives you an overview of the current state of the radeon open source driver http://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature your card is the N.Islands series card, so support for it is quite new.

i have ATI Radeon HD 6370M 1GB too on my laptop asus k52j, and i have the same problem. i'v installe xf86-video-ati for ati driver

I'm actually quite supprised that it told you it cannot run Gnome Shell.

Your machine with those specs should be capable of running it just fine.

be sure you are not disabling KMS

be sure you are not disabling KMS

i enabled the KMS with this instruction but still i'm in fallback mode : -(

Yes, I got gnome-shell installed.

It runs the shell quite well and doesn't need to to into fallback mode. To run the shell what is needed is 3d capable video card, are you running Catalyst? I am also using xf86-video-ati driver installed although I don't know if KMS is enabled or not. I'd appreciate further feedback regarding this.

I tried doing the ff. command:

# gnome-shell --replace

and I get the ff. results:

failed to create drawable

(gnome-shell:3192): Clutter-CRITICAL **: Unable to initialize Clutter: Unable to select the newly created GLX content
Window manager error: Unable to initialize Clutter.

I hope that gives some idea on where I should start. Tnx.

this is now fixed. i am able to run in gnome-shell already. all i did was remove the

nomodeset

from the

/boot/grub/grub.cfg

file for the Arch Linux entry for GRUB2
