Re: Linus and the voices in his head......Linux 3.0?

I think this actually is a good idea. We had so many disappointing major updates in the past years (KDE4, Gnome 3 to name the most annoying) that came with so many breakage. It's time for a smooth major version change. By the way: If so many scripts rely on the 2.6.x notation, the kernel will be the most important piece of code that breaks things without actually offering anything new. I think that privilege had to be taken from closed source companies, don't you think?

I think they should have made the change to 3.0 release scheme when they introduced KMS, I think that was a big change.

The idea is that there ISN'T a big change. It is just a renumbering. The code itself shouldn't "break" anything (like KDE4 and Gnome3 did)... The renumbering might break some scripts though wink

As far as I remember when 2.6 kernel was first introduced, they said that it was so advanced they could have named it 3.0. I think they could incorporate the renumbering with a change and my suggestion was KMS, otherwise it might make no sense and why do it now. He has his thought and I have the right to have mine, after all its all about discussion and unfortunatelly the renumbering has already been made, so, lets just embrace it with joy.

Heck, I like Donald Knuth's versioning of TeX.  It presently at 3.1415926.  Future versions converge towards pi.

It really is not a big deal.
