DWM & connection to X server lost

Hello,

I am not sure what happened, but I am unable to launch X. When I type startx, I see the wallpaper set by feh (I use DWM), and after a second it disappears and I'm back to console.

To rule out problems in .xinitrc, I tried to launch X as root (no .xinitrc), and the same problem happened: almost in X for a second, then all was lost.

$ startx &> startx.log
$ cat startx.log

waiting for X server to shut down

(The xkbcomp warning has always been there, and has never created any problem.)

I do not have an xorg.conf: before today I did not have the need as things worked.

I'm using the 2.6.39.3-1 kernel.

Recent pacman activity was this:

[2011-07-10 15:32] upgraded kernel26 (2.6.39.2-1 -> 2.6.39.3-1)
[2011-07-10 15:32] upgraded logrotate (3.7.9-1 -> 3.8.0-1)
[2011-07-10 15:32] upgraded tzdata (2011g-1 -> 2011h-1)
[2011-07-10 15:32] upgraded xorg-server-common (1.10.2-1 -> 1.10.3-1)
[2011-07-10 15:32] upgraded xorg-server (1.10.2-1 -> 1.10.3-1)

I've downgraded to the previous version of xorg-server and xorg-server-common, but nothing changed.

I'd be grateful if someone could shed some light!

Re: DWM & connection to X server lost

Here it is, but I must point out that even as root I had the same problem, and root uses the default xinitrc provided by xorg.

#!/bin/bash

##----------- start apps
#mpd ~/.mpd.conf &
xbindkeys &
sh ~/bin/mysynaptics.sh &
thunar --daemon &
urxvtd &
xset -b &
xbacklight -set 80 &

##----------- set background
feh --bg-fill ~/Pictures/Wallpapers/Clouds\ Wallpaper/Clouds.png

##----------- start dwm
while true
do
  xsetroot -name "$(perl ~/bin/status.pl)"
  sleep 30
done &

exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch dwm

Re: DWM & connection to X server lost

well, things you could try if not already done:
1. try with only dwm in .xinitrc (and redirect dwm output in a file, just in case something interesting would be in the output)
2. try with another window manager e.g. openbox
3. recompile dwm

Re: DWM & connection to X server lost

Thank you dobedo.

With only dwm in .xinitrc I get the same problem, and no output at all to help.
Recompiling dwm did not help either.

I installed xfce, and that did work, although the xcursor did not show.

So the problem must lie in dwm, right?

Re: DWM & connection to X server lost

Looks like.
I'm not using dwm but for what I remembered in the past, its config is built in the code.

What you could try (if not already done):
1. the new version of dwm 5.9 posted yesterday in the suckless.org site ; without your config (in case it's a problem somewhere in your config)
2. if it works then the new version with your config
... if it doesn't work...mmmh, don't know.

Re: DWM & connection to X server lost

I've tried 5.9 but nothing changes. sad
All dwm is saying is that some fontsets are missing, but that should not matter.

Re: DWM & connection to X server lost

Well, you have to reboot after a kernel update anyway.
Have you tried that or not?

Oh yes, I've rebooted after the kernel update.

Re: DWM & connection to X server lost

I think I can rule out DWM as the cause of the problem. I've uninstalled dwm and with no xinitrc I launched startx, expecting to get the basic screen with some xterms and the xclock. Instead, the problem persists: The connection to the X server is lost, and X is shut down.

With this lack of error messages I really don't know where to look.

[edit]
At the same time, XFCE does start up. It acts really wierdly though: no cursor, it does not find any apps (not even thunar, which is installed), and whenever I try to launch something the screen flashes black and nothing else happens. WTF?!

Re: DWM & connection to X server lost

If xfce & dwm doesn't work properly, might be linked to X and/or the driver.
Try to downgrade everything from the last -Syu

Re: DWM & connection to X server lost

Looking at the log, there is something odd with your fonts: it does not find basic fonts in /usr/share/fonts/100dpi. This can be a problem with dwm (which can not display its bar) and with many other window managers which need fonts for various reasons. Are the packages xorg-fonts-100dpi and xorg-fonts-75 dpi installed? Also if they are installed try to reinstall them with pacman.
