CD audio issue

Hello,

I cannot read audio cd with my up-to-date Archlinux:
- kernel x64
- optical drive: TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH

Optical drive works (works well on a windows setup)
No problems when reading DVDs
Not a end user software problem (vlc works for dvd, not for cdaudios)
Not a problem linked to a bad cdaudio (all cdaudios fail, tested ok on other computers)
My user is in "optical" group

Reading CDaudio takes a lot of time and then I'm getting those messages in dmseg:

Re: CD audio issue

It seems there is no quick fix applicable.

When I boot, I have the same kind of error messages - maybe it can help?

Re: CD audio issue

IO errors usually mean bad hardware - here a bad medium. You should check if you have similar behaviour with other CD's. The fact it works well on Windows is no guarantee, Windows might well be hiding the errors or have a different/better autocorrection mechanism.

Re: CD audio issue

I cannot read audio cd with my up-to-date Archlinux:
- kernel x64
- optical drive: TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH

Optical drive works (works well on a windows setup)
No problems when reading DVDs
Not a end user software problem (vlc works for dvd, not for cdaudios)
Not a problem linked to a bad cdaudio (all cdaudios fail, tested ok on other computers)
My user is in "optical" group

Reading CDaudio takes a lot of time and then I'm getting those messages in dmseg:

You need your user in group audio to play CDs.

Re: CD audio issue

TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S223C?  I've got one of those and it's a bit of a pain to get it working properly.  The first workaround for the long startup time and the "failed command: IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE" errors is to comment out the following rule in /lib/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-storage.rules:

# ATA/ATAPI devices (SPC-3 or later) using the "scsi" subsystem
KERNEL=="sd*[!0-9]|sr*", ENV{ID_SERIAL}!="?*", SUBSYSTEMS=="scsi", ATTRS{type}=="5", ATTRS{scsi_level}=="[6-9]*", IMPORT{program}="ata_id --export $tempnode"

(a tip I found at http://paulphilippov.com).  If the errors disappear but the drive is configured for PI04 (slooow) at boot - check dmesg - then the next step is to add

options libata atapi_passthru16=0 force=5:udma5

to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf, add

FILES="/etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf"

to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, rebuild the kernel image with mkinitcpio and reboot.

Re: CD audio issue

Thank you for you answer.

Your solution removes all startup errors I had before (causing a very loooooooooong startup), but I still get those kind of errors when I insert an audio cd:

Re: CD audio issue

Can you boot from the drive, i.e. with a live CD?
