I read this forum thread and I understand why jre and jdk packages have been removed from [community]. I want to ask if OpenJDK 7 will be provided instead of these packages. Please, forgive my ignorance, but as far as I understand, Oracle JDK 7 is based on OpenJDK 7. While I understand why Oracle JDK 7 cannot be packaged, I don't see any reason not to provide OpenJDK 7. According to this blog post Fedora, Ubuntu, and Debian already package OpenJDK 7. So, will we see OpenJDK 7 in Archlinux, too (currently only OpenJDK 6 is available)? Thanks in advance for the info!

IIRC Oracle released version 7 and it was available in our repos but then Oracle backpedaled and said it was a developer preview or something.
Edit: It was about jdk, not openjdk, the packages are still available from ARM:

Sorry for mixing things up.

Great! Thanks for the info. Hopefully, {jre,jdk}7-openjdk will be available soon and the order in the universe will be restored

Why does no dev answer to Guillaume's email? Why does Guillaume not push openjdk7?
Openjdk7 came out on 28 July,2011 ..

Evilandi666, why don't you provide a PKGBUILD ?
There's no such thing as a stupid question, but there sure are a lot of inquisitive idiots !

That's not really relevant, there already is a PKGBUILD. He is just asking why the pkgs aren't pushed into the repos.
All I can say is that I installed the pkgs referenced to in that email and everything seems to be working fine, but the only java apps I occasionally use are intelij idea and netbeans.

In that case he should ask on the mailing lists. Developers would know more.

That's exactly what I meant - Guillaume mailed that on the dev-public list, but no reaction from others, so I think it faded into obscurity. I don't know why Guillaume didn't put those PKGBUILDs directly in testing or why no one signed them off (don't even know if openjdk needs signoffs). Maybe they got some reasons we don't know, I will wait - it is not a big problem, but also not really the arch way in my opinion.
Edit: Thx Allan and karol (two posts below), that seems to be the reason - I didn't even know that he is the maintainer of it, I thought Guillaume is. Sorry

It will get there eventually... both devs that tend to deal with that package are away at the moment, so you will just have to wait (or adjust the PKGBUILD yourself using ABS, or use the AUR... etc).

Andreas Radke is the maintainer of http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/i686/openjdk6/ and he has just come back http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/ … 21623.html

So far there's no upstream Icedtea 2.0 relase for OpenJDK7. Work is in progress.

Http://icedtea.classpath.org/wiki/Main_Page#Getting_IcedTea says "IcedTea7 1.14, based on OpenJDK7" is a stable release, actual in Arch is 1.10 based on openjdk 6, afaik. But i did not find the 1.14 release on their downloads page, so don't if the wiki is right.
Why do you want to wait for 2.0?

Yes I saw that, but it this file is a bit old (may 2011), so I think this is the reason why Andy wants to wait

Old Icedtea7-1.14 was some kind of a prerelease not widely used and has a very old hardcoded early Oracle OpenJDK7 prerelease as source. That's really not what you want.
I'm currently building and preparing a hg snapshot that should be ready to use. I hope to bring them next week or so to testing for early adopters to start bug hunting.
