Screen randomly goes black after upgrade to nvidia 570.124.04

Upgraded about a day ago and since then my screen (single monitor) has gone dark a few times as if no signal is being detected. The upgrade could be a red herring of course, but everything was fine before then.

Ctrl + alt + del does nothing and my only option seems to be physically shutting down and rebooting.

Here's the list of upgraded packages:

[2025-02-28T23:58:49+0000] [ALPM] upgraded vulkan-tools (1.4.303-2 -> 1.4.304.1-1)

Any suggestions on how to go about debugging this? Not sure what logs may be useful here, Xorg.0.log doesn't keep any info on the previous session. Graphics card is RTX 4070 Ti

I'm a bit limited in my ability to do much testing as this is the machine I use for work (this may not be practical at the moment), so I may need to downgrade to 6.13.4 with the appropriate nvidia drivers and perhaps test whether it still happens.

Re: Screen randomly goes black after upgrade to nvidia 570.124.04

Obvious contenders are the kernel and nvidia update, you could test the behavior w/ eg. the LTS kernel and most recent nvidia driver or downgrade the kernel to 6.13.4 and nvidia to 570.124.04-1 to see whether it's more related to the latest nvidia driver version than the kernel update itself.

Re: Screen randomly goes black after upgrade to nvidia 570.124.04

yep, thanks for the feedback, will try that and see what happens.

Strangely enough, it hasn't happened in the last 30 hours, which makes me wonder if it's caused by the upgrade but there's something else I need to do in order to trigger it. Will keep an eye on that too

Re: Screen randomly goes black after upgrade to nvidia 570.124.04

Retracing my steps so far. Downgraded the kernel:

[2025-03-05T00:38:20+0000] [ALPM] downgraded linux (6.13.5.arch1-1 -> 6.13.4.arch1-1)
[2025-03-05T00:38:20+0000] [ALPM] downgraded nvidia (570.124.04-2 -> 570.124.04-1)

Bug manifested at 3pm and then again around 6pm, suggesting 6.13.5 is not the problem.

Downgraded all nvidia packages to their latest 570.86.16-x versions, keeping 6.13.4:

[2025-03-05T19:03:18+0000] [ALPM] downgraded nvidia-utils (570.124.04-1 -> 570.86.16-2)
[2025-03-05T19:03:18+0000] [ALPM] downgraded lib32-nvidia-utils (570.124.04-1 -> 570.86.16-1)
[2025-03-05T19:03:19+0000] [ALPM] downgraded libxnvctrl (570.124.04-1 -> 570.86.16-1)
[2025-03-05T19:03:19+0000] [ALPM] downgraded nvidia (570.124.04-1 -> 570.86.16-7)
[2025-03-05T19:03:19+0000] [ALPM] downgraded opencl-nvidia (570.124.04-1 -> 570.86.16-2)

I don't expect any issues as this was the setup I had before problems started, but I'll report back if this was all a red herring and the problem persists. Barring any unexpected hardware issues, everything seems to point to nvidia at the moment.

One of the threads I was following suggests the bug they were discussing (a somewhat similar problem affecting multiple monitors) will be fixed in 570.124.06 but, of course, this could be unrelated.

Re: Screen randomly goes black after upgrade to nvidia 570.124.04

Almost a week later and no more issues, so definitely caused or triggered by the driver/nvidia packages.

Guess I'll wait for the next driver to come out and hope it's fixed.

The nvidia forums' feedback thread is very active at the moment, so I'll post something there too: https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/5 … ion/321956

Re: Screen randomly goes black after upgrade to nvidia 570.124.04

There seem random, outright weird, issues around https://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Lin … E/gsp.html
For the proprietary driver (won't work w/ nvidia-open), try adding "nvidia.NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters

Re: Screen randomly goes black after upgrade to nvidia 570.124.04

Thanks, seth. I'll give it a try if the next version is still broken, whenever it comes out.

For anyone following this thread and for future reference, here's my post in the nvidia forums: https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/5 … 321956/339
