Hey All!
I am using gnome 2.6, what are some options for another desktop? I have tried KDE, but I never got used to it. I hear good things about enlightenment and windowmaker.
Any advice? What is the fastest desktop?
Thanks!

fluxbox, XFCE4, and my personal favourite, ion.

Use whatever the hell you want.
It's easy to switch, just try them all out. You've already gotten the big ones out of the way.
But:

I don't use the monitor, I can feel what the computer is telling me.
By the way, my friends call me neo.

Screen! Ahh, good times.
KDE works fairly well for me though I would probably switch to one of the lighter desktops if I wasn't too settled in a cozy groove.
I'm with contrasutra, try them all out if you can. One of them is bound to feel more natural, useful and let you get more done.

if you could run x-apps through screen, it would be even better.

Gnome 2.6.1 runs flawlessly, and is eye candy.

and is eye candy.
For me, that's the problem... so slow to boot up, slow to access stuff... Not really slow (I have a half decent processor), but slow. I like things to be immediate... sacrifice looks for speed and efficiency. Perhaps that explains a lot of my eccentricities.

x-apps? what are those?

I'd go with fluxbox-devel only if I were you.
(Oh yah... I go with that being me too!! )

Now that is hardcore.

ion is like rat poison only its useable.
If anybody uses fluxbox, they should certainly use fluxbox-devel from unstable.

My point was that ratpoison is really, really close to screen. I don't like it much myself and didn't actually expect the others to like it either.
One thing I like about windowmaker is that it really has a working configuration tool - everything is configurable through a GUI, including the desktop menu. How does fluxconf compare to that? I've been an Openbox fan for a while, but must admit that obconf has very limited value compared to wmaker's WPrefs.app

oops. I really do like it...

When I used flux, I configured it from configuration files, just like everything else in arch.

Fluxconf is okay as it let's you change things like slit placement & direction, window placement model, focus model, and a few other things pretty quickly. I found it easier than hunting around in the configuration file for those things, since the file is rather long. But in truth once I decided how I liked fluxbox to work, I hardly need it anymore. It does not include a menu editor or a hot key editor, but for those there is fluxmenu and fluxkeys. They're easy enough to use, but I prefer editing those configs with vi. The syntax is simple and straighforward (unlike Openbox 3, which uses xml in its menu config) and I get a better sense of what the final result will look like with a text editor than with fluxmenu.

Ah, but that's the mystery of XFCE4 my friend. XFCE4 has snipets of code written by David Copperfield and Harry Houdini, making it even faster than just the console. Call it Voodoo or Magic, but XFCE4 puts the "doo" in my "doo-hickey". EOD...

Ok, you win I recently tried XFCE again and I do like the fact that the components are totally independent of each other. This is what happened, though:
1. I didn't install xfce4-session because I don't like session managers (hmm, actually I don't think there's even a package for it)
2. I disabled the taskbar and enabled iconbox instead (takes up less space)
3. I found xfdesktop to have no real value over my setbg script, which loads alot faster, so I switched
4. I liked some of the modules for the panel, but most of them were kicked out right away
5. The WM is quite good (based on oroborus, isn't it?), but it misses a few features I use in openbox
6. In the end I went back to Openbox, continuing to use only Lil' Star - Iconbox
If the iconbox was a module for the panel I would probably use that and it would be great. The way it is now the panel gives too little value for me to run side by side with Lil' Star (looks kind of stupid too). Also I wish there was an easy way to reorganize the launchers in the panel. If you have a launcher in a pop-up menu and want to move it out on the panel, you have to delete the one in the menu and recreate it in the panel.

Hi all !
I don't understand why nobody speek of PekWM ?
It's a very fast WM. Veeeery configurable and very easy to do it (with a text editor). You can :
- tell a app to start on a specify desktop
- remove border
- have tab like PWM of fluxbox
- Autoproprieties. For exemple to groups automaticly some app on startup
- use mouse scroll to switch desktop
etc...
I only complain that it is not freedesktop compatible
Have fun !
Namlook :-)

I have spoken of PekWM in the past, used it for quite some time and loved it. Changes happen however and last I mentioned it was in this thread.
