[SOLVED] Linux won't shutdown, screen black but keyboard is awake

This is now old but I want it solves. One day I updated my windows and linux (like months ago) and now any linux wont shutdown, it does reboot but it wont shutdown, when I try to shutdown it shows the text which initialize the shutdown then screen turns off but the kefyboard is lit and it wont turn off, also when i tries to power it off by force power button (press 15-30 seconds, yes in my laptop it take 15-30 for poweroff and 60 for ec reset)  it restarts for some reason, holding power button for 15-30 seconds does poweroff my laptop when i am in grub, linux is opened, windows is opened, the reboot part only happnes when I poweroff the linux and its in this werid state, I dont know what logs to see, also i did turn off fast boot form windows

Update: I turned off fastboot on windows incorrectly, i did it properly by opening powershell typed `powercfg /hybernate on` then go to control panel > hardware & sounds > power options > what power button does > some admin button > un check turn on fast boot, then crazy shit happned, windows showd the same poweroff glitch, it did not poweroffed, previously windows was fine just linux was having issue.

My laptop is msi crosshair 16hx ai d2xw

Please post your journal logs for such runs

sudo journalctl -b | curl -s --upload-file - https://paste.c-net.org/

Re: [SOLVED] Linux won't shutdown, screen black but keyboard is awake

Further update after additional testing:

I confirmed the shutdown process itself completes successfully on Linux. "journalctl -b -1 -e" shows a clean shutdown sequence ending with:

- “Finished System Power Off”
- “Reached target System Power Off”
- “Journal stopped”

After the failed shutdown state, Caps Lock no longer responds, which suggests the CPU/kernel are already fully stopped while only the EC/keyboard lighting remains powered. The screen is black, fans stop, but keyboard backlight stays on indefinitely.

I also tested shutdown from a pure TTY ("Ctrl+Alt+F3") and the exact same issue occurs, so this does not appear related to KDE/GNOME/Wayland/X11 or user session services.

Additional tests already performed:

- Multiple Linux kernels including LTS
- Multiple shutdown commands ("systemctl poweroff", "shutdown -h now", forced shutdowns, etc.)
- Properly disabled Windows Fast Startup
- Enabled ERP Lot 3 support in BIOS
- Disabled BIOS Fast Boot
- Confirmed ACPI sleep mode is S3
- EC reset (60+ second power button hold with AC disconnected)
- Loaded BIOS defaults

A very important observation:
If Windows Fast Startup is ENABLED, Windows appears to shut down normally. If Fast Startup is DISABLED, Windows shows the exact same issue as Linux. Since Fast Startup avoids a true ACPI S5 shutdown, this strongly suggests the problem occurs specifically during firmware-level S5 power-off handling rather than inside the OS itself.

This started after what I believe was an MSI BIOS update delivered through Windows Update (“MSI BIOS” update entry). Current BIOS version:
E15P4IMS.10A (11/13/2025)

At this point I strongly suspect a BIOS/EC firmware regression related to ACPI S5 shutdown handling on this laptop model.

Re: [SOLVED] Linux won't shutdown, screen black but keyboard is awake

Current BIOS version:
E15P4IMS.10A (11/13/2025)

https://www.msi.com/Laptop/Crosshair-16 … AI-D2XWGKG shows
BIOS E15P4IMS.10A 2026-01-14
hmm
So MSI silently issued a new one? Anyways can you try reflashing the latest BIOS from MSI directly?

I purchased my laptop on 31 december 2025, and updated bios in 2026, why my linux shows wrong date?

Update: Lol msi used incorrect timestamp in their release i think let me check my update history

No, I was genuinely wishing you, and No I never had any experience w/ MSIs

I forgot how i checked my bios version and update date ???

I quiet didn't get it, earlier you said

Current BIOS version:
    E15P4IMS.10A (11/13/2025)

anyways, run

sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

on Linux, to check the current version of it...

Re: [SOLVED] Linux won't shutdown, screen black but keyboard is awake

Please don't bump, edit your previous post to mend it if nobody has so far replied and also avoid bloating the thread with mindless full quotes of previous posts.

About the fast-start situation, see 3rd link below and reboot windows and linux twice for voodo reasons (seriously)
If the S5 condition remains (even after updating to the latest BIOS version), test the behavior from some live distro (grml, arch install iso, …) - the ACPI will typically understand that this cannot be the hibernating system - if S5 fails there as well it's increasingly likely a general bug in the BIOS rather than related to your specific system.

we have been through this, the bios is already up to date with wrong timestamp

seth wrote:

Yes the issue is same with live usb and multiple linux kernal

seth wrote:

lets see, msi have asked for video and said they cant help much with linux but i am sure the reason caused in windows is the same reason linux is also having the issue.

Windows state:
Fast startup enabled Charger Plugged out: Normal
Fast startup enabled Charger Plugged in: Normal
Fast startup disabled Charger Plugged in: Normal
Fast startup disabled Charger Plugged out: Glitch

Linux State:
FSU E CPO = Duck
FSU E CPI = Duck
FSU D CPI = Duck
FSU D CPO = Duck

I read that - but has MSI actually confirmed this is the case (seems pretty wild)?

Does the BIOS behave differently if you blatantly lie?

No, I'm asking you that.
Cause it seems unlikely and I'd rather suspect that the BIOS wasn't actually updated on your system.
MSI Maybe Seriously Incompetent

Edit: ok, the files in the archive are all much older and the readme has December 2025 - so you are most likely on the latest version.

Yaa my bad, I checked by first looking in change logs then, change logs suggest last update on december 19th 2025, but when I flashed it to my system then again got the timestamp to be 13th nov 2025. so bios is good

You don't have to be mean like this sad

I did not mean to but since you took the question for a statement I figured you might benefit from that.
So, with the BIOS version being down to MSI being a clowns car, did you try to feign windows to the BIOS?

Lets look past misunderstandings...
@BIGBEASTISHANK, have you tried `acpi_osi=! acpi_osi="Windows 2015"` as https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters?
how's the result?

Edit:
Missed reply.

Didn't quite get what you mean, I installed bios update from msi website, then sent it to usb > opened bios > in advance update bios > selected the file > updated and system rebooted after completing the flashing process

I dont think this would work either, the thing I am trying is to downgrade the bios

I dont think this would work either

Whether it changes anything about your situation idk, but the (right) OSI string tends to have quite some impact on the BIOS behavior (leaving aside that this would still leave you w/ charger dependent behavior)
What windows version are you currently running?

It's interesting though that it works w/ S4 but not S5
Some systems have a feature to keep USB etc. powered on S5 (eg. for charging phones etc), does your BIOS have any settings itr?
