Touchpad stop working after update

Hi there. Yesterday I've updated my system (like I do every day), then reboot and the tap-to-click of my Lenovo Yoga 3 pro touchpad stop working. I had configured the tap-to-click via the gnome 3 touchpad section, but now Mouse and Touchpad panel hasn't a touchpad section anymore.

I've never had a synaptics.conf file and everything has always worked.

Any advice? Thanks.

Same problem here. Today I updated my Sony Vaio VGN-N21E. In the updates there was also xf86-input-synaptics. After rebooting, I wasn't able to tap (single / double left mouse click) on my touchpad anymore.

My Window Manager is Openbox.

I can't downgrade synaptics because unfortunatelly I don't have the previous synaptics version in my pacman pkg cache.

I hope they are going to fix this issue very soon.

Any tips?

Same issue here, with a Sony Series 7 Ultra laptop. Downgrading the synaptics package didn't do anything, nor did switching to libinput. Strange thing is, the cursor is still responding, and I can use the right-click button and the double-touch to scroll.

Same issue here. Model: HP Spectre x360 - 4100nv (plus an old Lenovo ideapad).
I fixed it by using the config file proposed in wiki (frequently used options), specifically I added the first 3 options referred to "TapButtons" to the sample config file: Touchpad Synaptics - Archwiki

Re: Touchpad stop working after update

The problem is tap to click not enabled by default now with synaptic nor libinput,  but with libimput I could enable it easily at the settings(KDE)

Its not really arch-related but I dont really understand the point of disabling tap to click by default

GNOME hasn't supported the synaptics driver for some time how.

Re: Touchpad stop working after update

libinput is suggested in the post install step:

post_install() {
  cat <<MSG
>>> xf86-input-synaptics driver is on maintenance mode and
xf86-input-libinput driver must be prefered over.
MSG
}

You can download the package using downgrade.

Yes, I already knew "downgrade" but it's useless, because it gives me the same updated version of synaptics and not the previous one:

$ downgrade xf86-input-synaptics
Available packages:

   1) xf86-input-synaptics-1.8.99.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz (local)

select a package by number:

So for me the issue in NOT already solved

Re: Touchpad stop working after update

I realized that I can tap-to-click only if I hit very hard on my touchpad. I know, it's weird, but I can't make it more sensitive changing the values in

Option "FingerLow" "30"
Option "FingerHigh" "50"

whatever value I put in there, I have to tap hitting very hard ....!!!

Re: Touchpad stop working after update

on Lenovo x220, the tap is back with unintalling xf86-input-synaptics and installing xf86-input-libinput
Just the scroll is now not very clear (needs 2 fingers; low sensitivity)

Re: Touchpad stop working after update

I managed to get tap-to-click working merging my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf  with 50-synaptics.conf.pacnew.

That's was one of two reasons why I switched back: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=213876

Re: Touchpad stop working after update

I got the same problem.

Adding

Option "TapButton1" "1"
Option "TapButton2" "2"
Option "TapButton3" "3"

below MatchIsTouchpad "on" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf as suggested in the man page

[...] Tapping is disabled by default for touchpads with one or more physical  buttons. To enable it you need to map tap actions to buttons. See the "TapButton1", "TapButton2" and "TapButton3" options.

and here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/To … ed_options solved the issue for me.

Re: Touchpad stop working after update

I have perhaps a slightly different issue. When I updated synaptics my mouse pointer stopped working. However, I do have tapping of any kind disabled.

If I use circular scrolling, that works. If I hold down my left button and try to move the pointer, it will move normally. Ditto, for the right button. I had this behaviour once before, a long time ago. If I just try to move the mouse pointer it will usually not respond. Occasionally, it will move a small amount, as though the driver gets information from time to time. Once in a while it will respond by moving a few centimeters on the screen, but mostly just a few millimeters -- if I keep trying to move it continuously.

I used the same 50-synaptics.conf the whole time.

Downgrading to xf86-input-synaptics-1.8.3-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz from xf86-input-synaptics-1.8.99.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz solves my issue.

Re: Touchpad stop working after update

I feel like we have I have the same issue.
My symptoms are similar to OP.
I have a touchpad.desktop file that returns Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?.
Using Gnome gnome-desktop 1:3.22.1-1 on a Dell XPS 15 9550.
Used downgrade to go to version xf86-input-synaptics-1.8.3-4-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz but get same message.

I'll bet you you are now running Wayland instead of Xorg.  This is a recent Gnome SNAFU; it is also why I don't agree that you are having the same issue.

I'm genuinely surprised this is my first post!

why I don't agree that you are having the same issue.

Your answer makes a lot of sense in reflection to my case, and I have many other questions in regards to this, but I don't want to hijack this thread, so I'll take my problems elsewhere sad

Thank you for answering!
