I keep having a problem with my 4k monitor only wanting to run on 2k. It's a dell with one analog VGA port and two DisplayPorts. I use the DisplayPorts with a HDMI apater. I have been able to get both screens running at the same time with 4k on one and 1080p on the other, but not consistently.
Strangely, xrandr shows DP1,DP2, HDMI1, HDMI2. So I guess if I use DisplayPort on both ends, it would be using DP1 or DP2. But when I use the HDMI adapter, it shows HDMI1, or HDMI2 as connected.
I have gotten 4k, but intermittently, it wants to run at 2k. I usually run linux-rt, but when I switched to linux stock, all it would give me is unknown connector at 1024x768, I've tried switching ports and cables and adapters. Even only runs one screen while booting up before I even get to X. So I don't know if it's just because it's a dell that I'm having a problem or something is wonky in the kernel.

I may have to CONSOLE you about your usage of ridiculously easy graphical interfaces...

The "unknown" monitor means you're running on the simpledrm device, a huge red flag in your descritption is "adapter", but to tell you anything more we'd need to see xorg log and ideally "xrandr --verbose"
Do you also have an intel Arc A580 chip?

My /var/log/Xorg.0.log is old, so I have to peruse the one in ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log
lspci says it is a intel xeon e3-1200. I guess that is for all onboard video outputs on a single chip? I don't think analog VGA goes up to 4k, but maybe someone else knows?
Xorg says it is HD 2500 intel graphics.
The modelines for 4k are in the xorg.log, but it says it's going to framebuffer to 2048x1152 instead of 3840x2160. And xrandr doesn't show the 4k modeline, only 2048x1152 as the highest, and I have to xrandr --ouput --mode in order to get it to do that because it selects a lower resolution than that.
I suspect that the DP<->HDMI conversion adapter probably doesn't help any. Plug it straight through HDMI on another computer and the screen works as expected.
And there are times when the screen just doesn't come back from sleeping. Have to reboot for whatever the reason is. I think it may have to do with the webbrowser (firefox or brave doesn't seem to matter), just hibernates and never wakes back up.

You can also test the drm-tip kernel, if it's the same problem, the same solution will apply.

xrandr --verbose won't show all the modelines including the 4k. But here's a strange one, the resolution it picks is not even in the modelines, only in xrandr.
xrandr --verbose

certainly try the main or lts kernel behavior.

Stock kernel seemed to be just that one unnamed port, but last check it has no difference than rt. So it's the same lower resolution. This has been off and on for awhile, haven't been able to figure out why it works 4k some of the time and not others. It seems to be fixed on 2k right now.

do you somehow scale the output?
The usual suspect would be the cable - is it graded "Premium high speed" or "Ultra high speed"?

I don't see any markings on my cables. They work well with 4k when directly hdmi hdmi, but the display port is probably where the mystery and confusion is.

Ah, forgot about that but
a huge red flag in your descritption is "adapter"
yes.

Even tried booting from Ubuntu live CD. Same thing. Doesn't seem to matter combination cables and/or adapters, no 4k via display port. Only straight hdmi.

It's a dell with one analog VGA port and two DisplayPorts. I use the DisplayPorts with a HDMI apater.
no 4k via display port. Only straight hdmi.
How do you use "straight hdmi" if the output doesn't have any HDMI input?
Also, tbc:
Plug it straight through HDMI on another computer and the screen works as expected.
The "straight hdmi" is from a different CRTC (different hardware/gpu), right?
What are the overall constraints here, why do you use an adapter tbw?
Can you use it w/ the other [edit: fullhd] output?

The dell is limited to the display ports and the vga analog. So if I want to use hdmi monitor, hdmi with display port to hdmi cable or adapter. Unless somehow I acquire a display port monitor. But as far as the monitor is concerned, it only likes hdmi. And seems to only want to run 4k with hdmi without display port in the middle.

Using a sdcard from a stick mini pc and putting it into a newer stick mini pc, allows me to use the older kernel on it, and achieve 4k. Had to use sdcard and funky linux option from bios that does strange things, to make that stick mini pc work. But using it allows me to achieve the full 4k, but installing updated arch linux on the new stick mini pc to the internal drive, won't boot unless I add nomodeset. Now it runs at a fixed resolution of 1280x1024, probably because of lots of differences between a 5 kernel and a 6 kernel. And kms. So without kms with nomodesetting, only one resolution. So maybe it has something to do with the kernel limiting my resolutions.

w/ nomodeset you'll only get vesa resolutions, the reason for 1280x1024 (sure it's the 5:4 mode and note XGA? regardless…) isn't the newer kernel.
I also assume the system actually boots, just the outputs don't work. Try to reboot by frenetically pressing ctrl+alt+del, then boot nomodeset and post your complete system journal for the previous boot (the one w/o nomodeset):
sudo journalctl -b -1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Without nomodeset it gets to udev and tries to mode set. But it freezes, makes an obvious screen distortion, and reboots. I had an old kernel 5 still in cache, so when I booted a kernel 5, it behaved at 4k just fine. I tried another variation of non stock kernel without nomodeset, and it booted on through up until it oopsed. It trigger some kind of double fault. It appears something changed between kernel 5 and kernel 6. I may try it on my first machine and see if I get 4k back instead of 2k.

I'd suggest to post journals from the 5.xx kernel boot and the current ones to look for significant differences that might explain any kind of behavioral change.

The one that is working on kernel 6 is not using the intel driver, it's using a iris/xe driver. And switching back to kernel 5 brings back 4k to the one machine running the display ports. So most likely the cabling is ok, it was before I starting having weird problems. Possibly the intel driver has changed or drm/kms in the kernel has changed. So I find these logs in journalctl? Is there a specific log that I hit with that?

Hein?
Just post both journals, eg.
sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st # current boot
sudo journalctl -b -3 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st # 3 boots ago
The one that is working on kernel 6 is not using the intel driver, it's using a iris/xe driver.
And also xorg logs from both boots.
According to your previous posts you've an IvyBridge IGP and I don't think that's supported by the experimental XE module which officially only supports TigerLake and newer.

No such fuss on kernel 6

I may have to CONSOLE you about your usage of ridiculously easy graphical interfaces...

You're clearly not using the xe module on either kernel, where does that idea come from? Some difference in the xorg log?
5.10.16-rt30-1-rt - 5.10.16 is notably a realtime kernel and
Mar 30 15:27:16 archlinux kernel: drm_dp_cec_set_edid+0x163/0x1d9 [drm_kms_helper]
Mar 30 15:27:16 archlinux kernel: intel_dp_set_edid+0x238/0x2a0 [i915]
Mar 30 15:27:16 archlinux kernel: intel_dp_detect+0x1bc/0x680 [i915]
apparently fails to expose the DP EDID to the drm subsystem?
for OUT in /sys/class/drm/card*; do echo $OUT; edid-decode $OUT/edid; echo "================="; done
You'll need https://github.com/timvideos/edid-decode/ (not yet in v4l-utils and the AUR package is unfortunately gone)
Do you use "drm.edid_firmware=…" on either of those boots?
Next:

Online
Hein?
Just post both journals, eg.
sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st # current boot sudo journalctl -b -3 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st # 3 boots ago
The one that is working on kernel 6 is not using the intel driver, it's using a iris/xe driver.
And also xorg logs from both boots.
According to your previous posts you've an IvyBridge IGP and I don't think that's supported by the experimental XE module which officially only supports TigerLake and newer.
I guess I missed the journalctl you had on the other post.
The xe machine is yet another machine.
