When i connect an external monitor via HDMI, the system hangs with no further output in journal, the screens stay black and i have to long press the power button. I also tried to watch the journal via ssh while connecting the cable and the shell hangs too. The whole system is up to date except the kernel that i keep at 6.12.74-1-lts because is the last lts that works. I also tried booting from non lts kernel and other distros (Fedora43 and Ubuntu26.04) and there is the same problem.

the screens stay black and i have to long press the power button
Try to reboot w/ the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboa … el_(SysRq) (all of the REISUB, nb. you'll have to explicitly enable that first) for any chance to preserve a journal, then post one anyway.
Does this even happen when only booting the multi-user.target?
For clarification, you're using 6.12.74-1-lts and that does NOT exhibit this behavior, it happens on the 6.18.x-lts kernels - did you test any version inbetween?
https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/l/linux/
Ftr, "Iris Plus Graphics G7" seems to be an IceLake chip.
Offline
I tested REISUB and it doesn't work when the problem happens but it works if the problem is not triggered. It happens even when I boot in multi-user.target. I tested with a lot of versions today:
until 6.15.9.arch1-1 everything is ok
between 6.16.arch1-1 and 6.18.13.arch1-1 the problem is triggered immediately after login even without plugging the HDMI
after 6.19.5.arch1-1 the problem is triggered only when I plug in the HDMI
Offline
then post one anyway
Please post your complete system journal for the boot:
sudo journalctl -b | curl -s -H "Accept: application/json, */*" --upload-file - 'https://paste.c-net.org/'Maybe something obvious shows up.
Next stop would be https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kdump
Offline
Run affected kernel(s) with boot kernel parameter 'loglevel=7' and after you login but before you connect external monitor, run command '(sudo) journalctl -f' so system messages will follow at realtime on screen and then connect external monitor and see if some useful messages show up... and if so, post here text or pic.
Offline
System journal for one boot:
https://paste.c-net.org/SuckersAccuracy
I'll try Kdump and i'll let you know.

What exactly is actually happening here? If you only boot the multi-user.target you're presented w/ the agetty login, you can enter your credentials but at that point things go south?
Or are you booting some DM (eg. sddm) login there (into what) and the screen turns off? Do you already have remote connection at this point or might we be looking at only superficially similar but ultimately different problems?
You'll also find a bunch of bisection kernels in https://pkgbuild.com//~gromit/linux-bisection-kernels/ - look at 6.15.r[0-9]* (not the ".rc.r[0-9]*" ones)

That boot was graphical.target but i tried also multi-user in other boots with newer kernels. In that boot i typed the password in gdm and the screen became black (i see the backlight so it should be on but black as always). I think that it's the same problem but i'm not 100% sure.

You can use GDM, so the problem there will be w/ the session process/script or maybe some user service - and the journal cut short because your finger eagerly reached for the power button ![]()
Try the behavior on the multi-user.target only to mitigate the impact of any userspace session and also test the behavior w/ a fresh user.

Now i tried multi-user.target with kernel 6.18.0, everything was ok until i plugged in the HDMI cable, so with multi-user.target the behaviour is the same with kernels 6.19.5 and later, the journal:

I'll try Kdump also.

I tried Kdump with kernel 6.12lts triggering crash with sysrq and it worked, then i tried with kernel 6.18.0 multi-user.target but when i plugged the HDMI cable the crash kernel didn't boot.

Recap:
* Plugging the HDMI cable at the multi-user.target halts the kernel
* no output on the console (eg. in a running "dmesg -w")?
* sysrq + reisub doesn't work
* no crash is being triggered (nor can be triggered) at this point
* 6.15.x is unaffected (so unlikely electrical)
Does 6.16.arch1-1 behave like 6.18 itr?
I assume there's something on the other end of the cable - what happens if you just plug the cable (no monitor connected)?
Do you have another monitor you could test?
Offline
The problem starts with the first 6.16.x, i tried also 6.15.rcx and 6.16.rcx and i can confirm this. I tried with the cable with nothing at the other end and all was fine, then i connected a monitor of another brand and the same problem happened, this time the screen wasn't black but there was a freeze of the image and a blue stripe appeared at the top, this was the only difference.

It's *not* in 6.16-rc1 ?

The problem is also in 6.16.rc1

Blast - that would have made a short list ![]()
Did you test any of the bisection kernels?

For some wild shot, try to throw "intel_idle.max_cstate=1 i915.enable_dc=0 ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=1 i915.enable_ips=0 i915.enable_dp_mst=0" at the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters

These parameters had no effect on the problem.

I tried bisection kernels and the problem starts with 6.16 kernels

Have you tried the first bisection point between 6.15 and 6.16 https://pkgbuild.com/\~gromit/linux-bis … kg.tar.zst

Yes, and it's affected by the problem.

"i915.enable_dp_mst=0 i915.enable_psr=0", but we already tested i915.enable_dp_mst=0 - PSR??
Then there're

https://github.com/gregkh/linux/commit/ … 89761e0e81
https://github.com/gregkh/linux/commit/ … 4511c151e4
Or the bug isn't in i915 at all (kinda pity that you can't test the xe driver
)
