I'm certainly not a hardcore gamer, but I like playing games, mostly old ones though. I play most of my games on my Amiga, which could explain my crapness at most things 3D

Re: unreal tournament - arch team

So I'm reading up on how to run a server.  I can probably host a game on my server as long as it doesn't end up eating too much bandwidth or bogging the system down too much.  The downside is that I'm going on vacation for a week and I don't want to fire it up until I can keep a close eye on it.

I figured we could just run a specific game in a continual loop.  What game type do you guys/gals want?  Do you want any of the mutators like Vampire or QuadJump?

Follow the link below, sign up, and accept one promotional offer.  If I can get five suckers (err... friends) to do this, I'll get a free iPod.  Then you too can try to get a free iPod. Thanks! http://www.freeiPods.com/?r=11363142

it would be great if you could do that.

yea when playing online, the map keeps changing. cool thing.

like mr. green, i'm in favour of the onslaught game. i find it the most fun game type... (not only) because of the vehicles

...if you make the server non-public, there shouldn't be many people connecting. and if we get better, we can always challenge others and join their server or vice versa.

btw after a match is over, you can vote which map you want by pressing esc. i don't really like dria, but crossfire and severance for example are really fun to play on.

Re: unreal tournament - arch team

uk, switzerland, austria... a european team sounds reasonable.
but farphel wanted to run the server. however, it would be cool if we ran the server in europe, so the timezone woudn't be a problem. i'll see what it takes to run a server.

that of course shouldn't mean that non-europeans are not welcome, it's just that i personally wouldn't feel good if i/we took over farphel's bandwith and we couldn't arrange enough matches because of the timezone problem.

and yes, EVERYONE is more than welcome to join.

Re: unreal tournament - arch team

Despite the timezone difference, you will also increase the ping by 50-100 when you play on another continent.

Re: unreal tournament - arch team

:!:  :!:  :!:

i'll be hosting a game tonight from 20:00-24:00 c.e.t (gmt+1).
game type: onslaught
server: arch_europe
password: woognob5

:!:  :!:  :!:

first of all, what's the difference between dedicated and listen server? i'm only  able to start a listen server, it crashes when i try dedicated server.
what's "webmin"? am i able to host a game or change settings without having to run the game itself?

i've set a password so it'll really be _our_ game.
the are gonna be 6 maps (with random power node setup) rotating.
min. nr. of players: 1
max. nr. of players: 12. i'll set it higher if there's demand and the speed doesn't get much worse (wonder how's it gonna be tonight, my machine is not a high-end 1).

sorry for the 4 hours, i got lectures tomorrow and my pc is in the room where i sleep (i got a 1-room-apartement). i'm planning to move into a bigger appartement in summer, but that's the far future.

 short-term plans:
i'll host a game tomorrow from 20:00 c.e.t. i'm going out though (yea, i got a life), so the game will be running til idontknowwhen (long enough  lol )
i'm planning to host a game on saturday from 20:00 c.e.t. don't know if i'll be playing, but it's gonna be on til at least 24:00 c.e.t.

i'll post it here if anything changes.

  mid-term plans:
i'm planning to host games as frequently as possible (let's see how things work out). it would be of course great to have a server running permanently (not possible for me. i'll have a look @ the webmin thing, it's not really clear to me what it is). but if not possible, we can just host games on a rotating basis. so if you're planning to host, post the time and details early enough (not like me now  ).

  long-term plans:
play a few times a week (without getting addicted), have fun, maybe kick the asses of some other teams/clans.

see y'all tonight!

EDIT:
my ip is: 80.109.76.233
right click in favourites, and add the server. then right click the server to join

EDIT #2:
no bots

Disclaimer : I never ran UT in any way.
But: I do run a dedicated Quake3 server since quite some time now.

In Quake3 a dedicated server is just the server which you can run on a headless machine. When you start up the dedicated server directly (a seperate binary), all you see is console messages. When you start the normal game and in the in-game menu you select "dedicated server". it *seems* to crash, while in reality it is switching to the previously described server mode. You then would nedd to fire up a second instance of Q3 and connect to 127.0.0.1 I could imaging UT works the same. Just do a ps aux and see if the UT server still is running !

Listening server is probably opening a server while still staying a client. There is something similar for Q3, too.

Re: unreal tournament - arch team

sounds good.
well, it doesn't crash then, but exits the game and runs "something in don't know"   in terminal. so that means that the server is running and i can do ther things on my pc (?). that would be great.

i'll check it out now

Re: unreal tournament - arch team

i forgot. my ip is: 80.109.76.233

i tried the dedicated server and it works. that means (if things work out tonight) that can run the server for longer times at once (read: start earlier, but don't necesserily play myself).

i'll see how the dedicated server works tonite. the dedicated server takes about 20% of my cpu on average. if it's stable, i'll might start it earlier (maybe in the morning) tomorrow.
