Arch holiday madness! nominations

This is the official thread of the "Arch holiday madness!" nominations!
Please read the article located on rollingrelease.com or archlinux.org before posting nominations here.

I will repost the article here for people having issues.

    * It's that time again, to give and receive presents, and to push the boundaries of what defines procrastination. That is why some of the trusted users (td123 & kaitocracy) are willing to listen to the community for package nominations to the [community] repo.

    * To vote, post the package names, and a brief explanation of why they should be included, to either the ML [1] or bbs [2]. Only comments made on the ML thread or BBS thread will be considered. To appease Xyne, we will only accept nominations on the ML that do not top-post. Make sure that the packages you nominate follow the guidelines [3]. We will consider packages which have the most nominations, but that will not be the definitive criterion.

    * At least 1 package will be added, but expect more to get included. You will be able to nominate packages until December 23rd at 23:59:59 UTC time. The packages that have been accepted will be announced sometime before December 24th 23:59:59 UTC, the day before Christmas.

   3. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AU … ty.5D_Repo

EDIT:
README - MUST FOLLOW:
I have seen a lot of posts without brief explanations to why the packages mentioned should get included.
I specifically said this in the article, so please add a reason. Nominations without a reason wont be considered.

I appreciate how everyone is trying to help by aggregating submissions into a single list with vote counts, but please understand that Kaiting and I are mostly looking for reasons why a package should be considered.

This is an example of what we're looking for:

I would really love to see enigmail and lightning. Both are very essential Thunderbird addons that seemingly need Arch-specifics to work properly (installing the generic versions via Thunderbird's own addon system doesn't work properly), and both are a pain in the ass to recompile. Compiling also takes hell long. So it would be REALLY awesome if they could be properly supported!

Oh, and just because it's nice to have: xtrlock. Awesome screen locking tool, very simple and lightweight too.

This is also a great submission:

dcc24 wrote:

Kupfer (135 votes on AUR): Launcher application written in python. Similar to Gnome-Do / Launchy. (No mono dependencies, hooray!)

Why it should be included: It has a lot of votes, gets regular updates, it's quite easy to maintain and most importantly, why shouldn't it be included?

This submission is not very useful to us:

Mhm, lets check pacman -Qmq
...
0. kbd-neo (well, my keyboard layout)
1. simple-scan (must have)
2. ranger (noaw)
3. jdownloader

nice to have:
* pike
* android-sdk
* spe
* pan
* linuxdcpp

What is simple-scan and why is it a must-have?

Also yaourt will never ever ever zero chance until the end of time enter an official repository. Any package that automatically installs unsupported packages, has licensing restrictions against redistribution, or requires significant patching to function will not be considered.

Re: Arch holiday madness! nominations

dvdbackup - short of a few votes but it has only just been moved to AUR from extra. The best software I have found for backing up DVDs. Other software such as vobcopy (community) fail to backup a lot of my DVDs; dvdbackup has never let me down.

I hear it was moved to a new server today...  I guess DNS change is still propagating.

GHDL

Because we do not yet have a VHDL simulator in our repositories. And GHDL is definitely the best choice.

pandoc is the universal Markdown interpretator which can be used as an easy way to produce ODT, RTF, PDF, PS and LaTeX documents. There are really no alternatives for markdown

Calibre

It's, AFAIK, the best (FOSS) eBook collection manager, a must have for anyone who has an eBook reader, or simply likes to keep their ebook collection clean and tidy.

Re: Arch holiday madness! nominations

ttf-ms-fonts and ttf-vista-fonts

Because they're needed for correctly displaying many documents and websites created by Windows users.

A matter of principle, or a matter of licensing issues?

Re: Arch holiday madness! nominations

Licensing issues sort of.  Note ttf-ms-fonts was dropped from the repos about a week ago because of this.   You can not distribute its files directly in a package.  You have to distribute the original exe files and extract the fonts later.  So pacman will not actually track those files.

That, and nobody takes Windows users seriously anyway tongue. If you run a website, run it on a *nix at least...

looks like you're using the outdated one full of known drive-by exploits tongue

And rxvt-unicode in [extra] already supports 256-colors these days. wink

flashplugin - outdated package, use prerelease for 64bit
mupdf-darcs - mupdf is already in community
rxvt-unicode-256color - I deleted this one myself, switch to rxvt-unicode in extra since it has 256 colors enabled

Haven't checked out the other ones.

Btw, you didn't follow the article. You should provide a brief sentence about why we should include it.

Re: Arch holiday madness! nominations

My nomination(s):
cairo-xcb + awesome

Simply the best window manager ever (sorry xmonad fans). I know a lot of other archers use it too, so it would sweet to see it in [community].
