0.8 alpha/beta and final Voodoo installation feedback

Hi Arch community,
i'm sure you all saw the bump to 0.8 Voodoo yesterday,
new release also means new installation iso smile

Get the isos here:
i686: ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/0.8/i686
x86_64: ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/other/0.8/x86_64

Bug collector for showstoppers is here:
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/6031

Short summary what happened and what still needs to be done for final ISO:
Changelog of ISO (compared to 0.7.2 install iso)
- Full mkinitcpio support
- Updated packages (including linux 2.6.19.1)
- Installation on PATA and IDE possible (PATA is default now)
ide-legacy option included for old IDE subsystem
- dropped install floppy support
- switched from busybox to archboot usage
- All parameters initcpio understands, new ISO does understand
- Usb devices (keyboards/cd/dvd) should now work as they should
  else it's a kernel bug
- Usage of hwdetect/udev autodetection during boot
- Added memtest86+ to iso
- Added installation support on cciss devices

Changelog of new setup (compared to 0.7.2 setup)
- added some information dialogs
- added some confirmation dialogs
- added set root password
- removed all kernel24 stuff
- switched to initcpio only support
- added locale-gen file for editing
- only show devices that are usefull in mountpoints selection,
  partitioning and network
- possibility to select dm and md devices from setup
(creation of lvm and md still needs to be done by hand!)
- mkinitcpio autoconfiguration. This includes HOOKS autoconfiguration
and hostcontroller configuration: ide/scsi/sata modules are put into
MODULES= in mkinitcpio.conf to ensure right loading order and avoid
  device-swapping
- network modules are put in the MODULES=() in rc.conf - again, this is
done to avoid random swapping of multiple network interfaces

IMPORTANT/TODO:
- docs are still from 0.7.2 install iso
- keymap HOOK bug, already fixed on CVS
- timezone bug
- switching to grub usage instead of isolinux

now one big wish, please test those installation cds and report issues to the links posted above, on bug tracker, here or ML

help us in finding the last bugs we missed,
thanks arch community

greetings
tpowa

Re: 0.8 alpha/beta and final Voodoo installation feedback

THANKS for the XMas present smile

I installed it yesterday night, and I'm reporting:
by selecting the default option (Archlinux) in GRUB I get an infite loop of this:

atkbd.c: spurious ACK on isa0060/serio0.

(followed by something is trying to access hardware directly)

I tried the earlymodules=piix but it didnt solve the proble (like it did in my 0.7.2 setup, updated to 2.6.19)

the Archlinux-Fallback option in GRUB seems to be ok
(by "seems" I mean: I got into console, installed XORG/Gnome, loaded some modules (speedstep_centrino and some sony stuff) and surfed in the net big_smile)
[hardware: Laptop with Centrino1.6ghz]

It might be me that I'm doing things wrong, but I thought it wont be bad to report it!

I'll try to put it my desktop pc, but right now it seems to be a bad idea (it is working!)

Re: 0.8 alpha/beta and final Voodoo installation feedback

Mikos dont forget: this is an ALPHA release!
there might be several months between the alpha and the gold release
(take blizzard for example tongue)

the fact that Pacman3 isn't in this image of Archlinux doesn't mean that it wont be in the final 0.8
and i'm sorry to say that the best answer is: it will be released when its ready
after all, that's the reason most people end using Arch big_smile

anyway:
another (funny) bug!
when booting Archlinux-Fallback
kernel enters in a loop IF there is a disk in my cdrom drive!
(computers never cease to amaze me)

Since I haven't touched any configs (other than rc.conf) I suppose this can be categorized as a bug, right?

Cya later, I'm going to do some homework and then I'll try to find out how the bugtracker works (never used it)

Yes, should all work now - if your machine can boot from USB optical.

As for the people with the funny boot trouble: Please send me the setup-generated mkinitcpio.conf files, as well as the contents of zcat /boot/kernel26.img | cpio -t to thomas@archlinux.org

Before you do so: Did you use the setup-generated menu.lst? PATA is now used by default (unless you select ide-legacy boot option), thus you have sda names even with IDE drives.

New isos with grub should be up tomorrow or so.

I'm a tad confused...are we supposed to switch to using PATA instead of IDE even if we don't have the pixx requirement and are using standard IDE drives?

Re: 0.8 alpha/beta and final Voodoo installation feedback

That only concerns the installer. Already installed systems are not affected (until kernel devs decide to remove IDE). The installer can use ide-legacy as well if requested.

BTW, new alpha isos for i686 are up and should be available on your favorite ftp mirror in /other/0.8/i686/ soon.

I bet you a quarter you're loading the wrong initcpio image.  I had the same problem until I noticed 2.6.19 created kernel26.img and my menu.lst was pointing to initrd26.img.

madwifi would have really helped me out.  I have a laptop with no ethernet port and I had to bootstrap my network connection.

Re: 0.8 alpha/beta and final Voodoo installation feedback

my menu.lst is like this

# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda2 ro
initrd /boot/kernel26.img

# (1) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux Fallback
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda2 ro vga=773
initrd /boot/kernel26-fallback.img

and it was automatically created this way by the installer smile

I haven't selected anything ide-legacy.
My menu is exactly like the one I pasted on top!
I'll email you the the files later at night (once I return home)

But I'm getting confused here...
What's the difference beetwen PATA & IDE ? (I should wikipedia it)

Those are just terms of Linux subsystems. PATA is the replacement for the IDE subsystem. PATA is layered above the old SCSI subsystem (which already hosts SCSI, SATA, USB, FireWire), while IDE has its own subsystem. The latter will be dropped from the kernel in the future.

Another question: Did you change the preconfigured mkinitcpio.conf? Did you use the recommended autoconfiguration?

Re: 0.8 alpha/beta and final Voodoo installation feedback

This has nothing to do with the iso or installer, more with 2.6.19, so bear with me... just to give some more information on mandos' (and mine) problem:

:: Initramfs Completed - control passing to kinit
IP-Config: no devices to configure
kinit: Cannot open root device dev(0,0)
kinit: init not found!
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
<4>atkbd.c: Spurious ACK on isa0060/serio0. Some program might be trying to access hardware directly.
(repeats endlessly)

System:
Intel 440BX chipset, piix onboard, cdrw/dvdrom is /dev/hda
hpt370 is also onboard, main harddisk is /dev/hde (swap|boot|root|home), storage hd on /dev/hdg
mkinitcpio.conf:
HOOKS="base udev", MODULES="sd_mod libata pata_hpt37x jfs" (or "ide_disk hpt366 jfs" for legacy ide, I'm still testing)

Now, the funny thing is: When I switch from label-based naming in menu.lst (actually lilo.conf for me, but won't matter in this case) back to fixed device names, everything is alright.

My other system has no problems at all, neither with pata vs. ide, or with label-booting or not ... on the other hand it has no piix either.

EDIT: and to add, no, even commenting MODULES and going back to the default HOOKS (from memory: base udev autodetect ide sata scsi filesystems?) won't change a thing.

EDIT2: google trivia: to get rid of that atkbd.c scrolling, add "i8042.panicblink=0" to your kernel commandline

Re: 0.8 alpha/beta and final Voodoo installation feedback

Despite the slow syncing, I have some mirrors for you that already have the second alpha base iso from yesterday night (i686 only atm, current and ftp not synced yet for most of them, x86_64 coming soon):
This should increase the download speed for all of us and decrease the load on the main server.

ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributio … r/0.8/i686
ftp://209.85.41.133/other/0.8/i686/
ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pu … /0.8/i686/

md5sum: cf7ddaf4b2598d23935537aab2782667  base-0.8-20061218-i686.iso

Maybe your favorite mirror already has it as well.

Re: 0.8 alpha/beta and final Voodoo installation feedback

Hello,

I don't know what (if any) changes were made to the iso's from
"base-0.8-20061217-i686.iso" to the ones going on the mirrors
now, but I installed with the former.

System:
Gateway Solo 9300 laptop
Intel 440BX
600mhz P3
224M pc100 ram
IBM Dara 12G hard drive.
Teac CD-224E cdrom

In order to run "PATA" (which I think is the point of this exercise),
I had to install as follows:

Boot into setup with

arch ide-legacy

When the time came to configure the system, I changed all /dev/hdxx
references in fstab to /dev/sdxx . Everything else was normal.
When the time came to install lilo, I had to leave /dev/hdxx references
alone or lilo would not install.
Upon reboot, I paused lilo and booted with

arch root=/dev/sda2

Once I was running, I changed /dev/hdxx references in /etc/lilo.conf to
/dev/sdxx , saved, ran

lilo

rebooted, and all is well.

I hope this helps some one.
If it's hard to follow at all, I'm sorry but I've been up for almost 24
hours, my glasses need replaced, and I had pizza and coffee for dinner.

Hasta Lumbego

Re: 0.8 alpha/beta and final Voodoo installation feedback

I installed base-0.8-20061218-i686.iso under qemu for a test and it runs nice through. At first i have to say that i don't think that all my points are showstoppers.

There is only one little thing what i missed: The possibility to choose the disklabel in the format menu and having lines with the choosen disklabels in the fstab as comments.

The way to write the network modules in the rc.conf is nice but is this realy easier than having a udev rules with the custom mac address? The most other distros use this way and at example suse create this line(s) during the installation.

Im my case after getting the same problems as a lot other here with the order of the network devices i wrote a rule to create /dev/lan and all works good. My problem was that even after a shutdown the firewire interface gets eth0 and after a reboot the internal network card was eth0. This makes me so much crazy that i choose the longer way but the result is okay.-)

you mean that with this command the system will boot normally?
because now I'm booting linux with the fallback option

why does kernel26-fallback work, and kernel26 doesn't?
aren't they the same version (2.6.19)?

brain0 I've send you the files through email, if anyone else wan'ts to see them please tell me, I'll upload them to a pastebin/rapidshare

I'm also downloading last nights release, but I don't know if I can install it tonight sad

Re: 0.8 alpha/beta and final Voodoo installation feedback

yeap, I have the first version smile
(20061217)

saw it when I was going to download the newiso of 0.7.2 and (as always) I couldn't not try it big_smile

I'm burning the 2nd version now and I'll report back asap

EDIT-CONTINUED:
please tell me something, is it ok to install the beyond kernel with the new version?
I understand that Arch is "rolling", so there won't be any problems, but I thought it won't do any bad to ask
(this will be the first time that I'll use beyond, so I don't have any experience on it, I'm wiking it now)

I tried once with a default boot, however, it didn't see my (5 yrs old or so?) cd drive.  It had no trouble with the disks, though.

I'll try the new version, and see if there's any change.  Otherwise, I'll try the suggestion given above and see if it will work, once installed, with the CD drive.

Re: 0.8 alpha/beta and final Voodoo installation feedback

Installed on an intel motherboard with a sata and ide drive. Booted fine and all went well. After running pacman -Syu the drive letters changed from sda to sdb. Edited the fstab and grub to reflect the change and all fine for now. Had to change the xorg.conf file for the mouse from /device/input/mouse to /device/input/mice to get it up and running.
